الملخص

در کتاب «نسل بشر»، داروین دربارۀ توانایی ما در درک ریتم موسیقیایی فرضیه‌ای داشت مبنی‌بر اینکه، این توانایی جنبه‌های بنیادین عملکرد مغز ما را، که با حیوانات اشتراک بسیار دارد، بازنمایی می‌کند. باوجود اینکه این فرضیه همچنان به‌صورت ایدۀ جالب‌توجهی باقی مانده‌است؛ مطالعات جدیدِ گونه‌های مختلف خلاف فرضیۀ داروین را نشان می‌دهند. این پژوهش مبین این مسئله است که توانایی ما برای همگام‌شدن با یک ضرب، یعنی حرکت همزمان با درک پالس به‌طوری‌که این حرکت در دامنۀ وسیعی از گام‌ها قابل‌انعطاف و قابل‌پیش‌بینی باشد، تنها بین انسان و چند گونۀ جانوری معدود مشترک است. اگر واقعاً چنین باشد، این واقعیت پیامدهای ضمنی مهمی را برای درک ما از مسئلۀ تکامل موسیقیایی انسان در پی خواهد داشت.
