Abstract

 Poetic discourse is distinguished by its high artistic qualities. The latter have the capacity to demonstrate the inquiry of individuals and societies within social and political frameworks, particularly political poetry; which serves as a critical platform and an effective tool for challenging oppression and striving to reinforce group identity.

Undoubtedly, satire is one of the sharpest literary devices leveraged by political poetry, enabling the poet to articulate critical views of corrupt ideologies through a language rich in irony and sarcasm. This language exposes the contradictions within regimes, their illusory principles, and false slogans, transforming satire into a symbol of defending justice and rejecting injustice. This reflects the aesthetic level of texts that provoke contemplation on the bitter political reality.

Satirical discourse in Arabic poetry raises questions related to the Arab political environment, which has experienced various forms of political regimes but all share a common failure to fulfill the aspirations of selfhood aiming for liberation, emancipation, and progress. Among these questions are; – How does satirical literary discourse reflect the political situation? – What are its artistic tools that enable it to convey the human message?

This study aims to answer this issue by investigating the aesthetics of satirical discourse in the condensed poem "The Bull and the Pen" by the Iraqi poet Ahmed Matar. The poem balances sharp political expression and artistic innovation in implicitly raising social questions, revealing the underlying cultural patterns imbued within this satirical discourse.

Therefore, it addresses the linguistic, syntactic, and rhetorical dimensions and examines the impact of artistic techniques on constructing political and social meaning. The analysis of this discourse relies on some methods of stylistic and aesthetic analysis, supported by social and political - based insights through an integrated approach striving to explore the pragmatics of satirical discourse in its intellectual and artistic dimensions.
